Fresh off a first win at the 2026 World Cup, Luka Modric only has eyes for Croatia.
The 40-year-old will be a former AC Milan player in six days when his one-year contract expires unless he makes a miraculous turnaround.
Modric signed for a year from Real Madrid, but a positive start descended into end of season chaos.
Milan dropped from second to out of the top four, missing out on Champions League football next season.
Their ownership then went nuclear, sacking coach Max Allegri, plus the sporting director, technical director and CEO.
All of this has surely reduced their chances of keeping Modric for next season.
Modric on his future
Asked about his club future, he refused to make a statement, saying: “I’m focused exclusively on the tournament because I want to help the team in the best way possible.”
It was earlier reported that Modric was keen to stay in Milan and work alongside Allegri in the Champions League.
Yet both those factors are now gone, and a definitive departure is looking more likely.
AS have also reported that he’s now considering retirement from football after the World Cup.
Modric on Croatia’s chances
Modric said of his team at the World Cup: “Croatia’s greatest strength in recent World Cups has always been unity, and it must be the same this time.
“We’re not here to participate, to be extras. When the group is united, we can compete with anyone.
“We more experienced players must lend a hand to the younger players, help them grow, and pass on our experience, quality, and character. The young players must feel free to showcase their talent, and we must support them.
“There’s a generational shift underway, but we want to continue winning and performing well, as we have in the last two World Cups.”
Modric says goodbye to Milan
Posting at the end of the season on social media, Modric appeared to say goodbye to Milan.
“A season with good times and difficult times, but ultimately we have to face the harsh reality and admit that it didn’t end the way we wanted,” he wrote.
“I’d like to thank all the AC Milan fans from the bottom of my heart for the love, respect, and tremendous support they’ve shown me throughout the year! Forza Milan.”
