AC Milan’s dramatic downturn in form could well set back their project by years.
Milan were Serie A title challengers earlier this season, but have four defeats in 10 games plus just one win in five.
As such, they’re not only no longer in the top two, but at risk of dropping out of the top four completely with Juventus two points behind and Roma three.
With the top four placed in Italy garnering Champions League football and the riches that come with it, Milan are now at serious risk of their project derailing.
Allegri could leave Milan
Leading European and Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport claim that without Europe’s top tier competition head coach Max Allegeri would be unlikely to stay.
In fact, a top four finish would automatically trigger a clause in Allegri’s contract, extending the deal until 2028.
The six-time Serie A winner is being linked with the Italy national team job, and has regularly spoken about needing Champions League money to continue building his squad.
It’s estimated that Milan would miss out on around €100million in cash to spend on transfers if they don’t make Europe’s top tier.
Modric considers Milan future
On top of that, key midfielder Luka Modric would also consider his future.
The 40-year-old footballing great is signed until June 30th but won’t play again this season after a jaw fracture against Juve.
There was plenty of hope he would stay another season due to two crucial factors.
Modric both loves working with Allegri, and dreams of returning Milan, the club he supported as a child, to the Champions League.
However, with both of those criteria now at risk, so are Milan’s chances of keeping Modric, who could even retire.
