Despite themselves only becoming a professional club this century, Bundesliga newbies Heidenheim took their fury out on Leipzig.
The East German side have been one of the country’s best teams in recent years, reaching the Champions League semi-finals and twice winning the DFB Pokal.
Yet their Red Bull ownership and forcing of the initials into the ‘RB Leipzig’ name and onto the logo are just a few of the many reasons the team are detested in Germany by rival fans.
Heidenheim have only just encountered Marco Rose’s team at their home stadium, but left them a nasty present in the form of butyric acid in the car park outside the away end.
Fans were left disgusted by the rancid smell which is formulated in rotting dairy and fish products.
Leipzig fans also had to deal with a series of ultra stickers including ones that read ‘FCK RBL’ and ‘RBL: football murderers!’
Despite the distractions, Leipzig prevailed on the pitch with a 2-1 win that kept them in the top four.
Heidenheim’s long-serving coach Frank Schmidt also had a word for the fans, saying: “I have no form of understanding. the perpetrators of the offense are devoid of intelligence.”
