Real Madrid’s season ended with a whimper, as did Kylian Mbappe’s.
The France captain started the season finale against Athletic Club, and scored in the second half.
However, in the first half every time he touched the ball he was booed and whistled.
Speaking at half-time, commentator Antón Meana said Mbappe’s performance was “absolutely non-existent.”
Eventually, Madrid won 4-2 in Dani Carvajal and David Alaba’s farwell match.
Yet it was a trophyless season, characterised by Mbappe.
The striker caused complaints throughout the campaign for his lack of pressing and understanding of the club.
Things went off the rails in the last few months when he began spending time off injured abroad on holiday with his new celebrity girlfriend.
It somehow got even worse when he was out of the squad to face Barcelona with ‘muscle strain’ an ailment pundits and fans didn’t deem sufficient.
Returning for their next match, Mbappe was viciously booed, but responded with a grin, when it’s standard practice for Madrid players to hold their hands up and apologise.
Post-match, he then made a shock attack on coach Alvaro Arbeloa and defended his actions which had seen fans turn on him.
Speaking in March, AS editor Tomas Roncero explained what’s wrong with Mbappe.
“Kylian is incredibly talented, but he lacks the empathy needed to understand what this club needs to create a real connection with him and win the hearts of the Madrid fans,” he said.
“Vinicius can make mistakes, but he makes them with heart.
“Kylian is so detached in his actions that the Bernabeu crowd no longer knows what to think of him.
“He’s capable of scoring tons of goals, but he needs to rethink his attitude, and his friend Vinicius has shown him the way.”
