Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull links are unsurprisingly causing him problems before becoming Germany head coach.
The ex-Liverpool boss is the energy drink brand’s ‘Head of Global Soccer’ a job that saw him lambasted by former clubs Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.
Leipzig are seen as the antithesis of everything German football stands for, founded in 2009 with a very different ownership structure.
Klopp’s move saw a money-grabbing effigy at Mainz carnival and numerous critical banners at Dortmund’s stadium.
Now, there are rumours of him continuing to work for Red Bull while Germany coach, with the sight of a Red Bull cap repulsive for supporters.
Unsere Kurve’s statement to the DFB
Fan alliance Unsere Kurve (Our Curve) have reminded the German federation [DFB] of that in a strong statement.
Spokesperson Thomas Kessen told SID: “This would be another capitulation to capital.
“Instead of recognising the unique characteristics of German football as a strength and building sustainable success on this foundation, they strive for quick results and are prepared to pay for them with a lot of money and integrity.”
He added on Klopp in particular: “We do see a dissonance surrounding the public perception of Jurgen Klopp.
“Anyone who acted down-to-earth in Mainz and Dortmund and even introduced himself as ‘the normal one’ in Liverpool doesn’t fit in with the enemy of the people’s sport of football – the RB corporation.
“Before Klopp is elevated to a pedestal as a supposed saviour, Unsere Kurve wants to remind everyone of the reactions and the lost credibility, especially among the Dortmund supporters.”
The DFB’s plan to avoid Klopp’s severance fee
Sport1 report that the DFB are keen not to pay Klopp’s multi-million severance fee in his Red Bull contract.
One work-around would be allowing him to continue promoting the company, which was ‘favoured by all parties’ during discussions.
Red Bull look for Klopp replacements
With Klopp’s switch all but done, his Red Bull bosses are looking at who can fill the void.
BILD report that Roger Schmidt is a possibility, as is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Markus Krosche.
Another interesting name is that of Thierry Henry, who Red Bull previously approached for a coaching role.
