With much less work as an international manager, Julian Nagelsmann’s commitment to Germany is still being questioned.
The former Bayern Munch and Leipzig head coach is currently on vacation, meaning he’s been missing the under 21s journey to the European Championships final against England.
DFB Managing Director Andreas Rettig was asked about his absence ahead of a semi-final win over the Netherlands and things got surprisingly heated.
“I don’t want to give the impression that our national coach is lying on the couch somewhere and is ultimately not interested in the topic,” said the DFB boss.
To which former Germany star Markus Babbel responded: “For me, it’s actually a must-attend event for the A-team coach.
“People always talk about how closely interlinked everything is – and then you give the impression that ultimately, it doesn’t interest me.
“It also has something to do with appreciation. Showing up… It’s not surprising that we have this semi-final today. I think you have to plan your vacation around it.”
Rettig sarcastically replied: “Of course you’ll get applause for that at the pundits’ table, there’s no question about that, Markus.”
He added: “It’s being faked or suggested that if he’s not present, he’s not particularly involved. The national coach will come when we’re in the final. That’s really a typically German issue.”
