When Josip Iličić left Atalanta by mutual consent in 2022 it was a huge loss for football, but now he looks set to star again at Euro 2024.
The forward stepped away from elite level in 2021 due to mental health struggles reportedly triggered by the pandemic.
He left Atalanta, a side he’d become synonymous with, and returned home to Slovenia thankfully later returning to action with Maribor.
However, it looked like that would be the last we saw of the 36-year-old at the top level, but things have changed suddenly.
Iličić has been included in Slovenia’s Euro 2024 squad, and in his first game back in almost three years, he scored a trademark goal against Armenia which can be seen below.
Slovenia won the friendly match 2-1, and they have another warm-up against Bulgaria before their European Championships campaign. The nation have been drawn in Group C along with England, Denmark and Serbia.
