John Textor has caused anger at one of his many clubs, this time Belgian Pro League hopefuls RWDM.
The Lyon, Crystal Palace and Botafogo owner has announced that from next season onwards RWDM will be known as ‘Daring Brussels’.
The name comes from the Belgian city they sit beside, and their former full name ‘Racing White Daring Molenbeek’.
RWDM are the second oldest team in Belgian history behind only Antwerp, and supporters are outraged.
Defending the change was CEO Maxime Vossen who has had to come out and back his boss.
“We didn’t make this decision overnight,” said Vossen. “But to grow, a strong club name is very important.
“As a board we fully support this decision because his arguments are valid.
“When Textor talked about RWDM in the US, he was immediately asked ‘What do those letters stand for? And where is that?’ With Daring Brussels you don’t get such questions.”
“After all, nobody in the world knows where Sint-Jans-Molenbeek is, but do know Brussels.
“It will help us to attract new and larger commercial partners, but above all to convince better players more easily to come to our club.
“Because let one thing be clear: despite the missed promotion last season, we remain very ambitious as a club.”
RWDM finished third in the Challenger Pro League in 2024/25, missing out on the top two automatic promotion spots to the Belgian Pro League.
The then lost in the first round of the play-offs and will have to go again in the new campaign.
