We may not see a return to the dugout for the great Luciano Spalletti, at least given his most recent comments.
The Serie A winner with Napoli was sacked as Italy manager in June after a loss to Norway in World Cup qualifying, ending his run in a job he says he waited 30 years for.
Remembering that moment, he told La Repubblica: “The defeat against Norway keeps me awake at night. It’s always on my mind.
“Sometimes I’m happy and suddenly that thought comes back to me and the joy disappears.
“When the national team calls you, you have to give your all and make yourself fully available. There’s no need to think about it.”
Now aged 66 and having worked in coaching for 30 years, Spalletti also made a stark admission which hinted at retirement.
“Football ruined my life,” he said.
“I loved football more than myself. I sacrificed my loved ones for it.”
