Jose Mourinho is heading back to Real Madrid, and according to Alvaro Arbeloa, he’s Real Madrid fans’ ‘number one’.
The Portuguese coach has reportedly agreed a two-year deal at the Bernabeu with the option of a third, leaving Benfica after an unbeaten league season.
Madrid, meanwhile, went trophyless, arguably for the second season in a row, when is comes to the big honours.
Worse than that, though, is a dressing room in disarray, punctuated by fights being leaked to the media, including one that sent Fede Valverde to the hospital.
Mourinho is seen as one of the few figures who can demand the respect of the dressing room after his former players Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa failed to do so.
Returning since his first stint from 2010 to 2013, Mourinho has won a number of trophies since, but nothing quite compared to his early years that saw him rightly called a Galactico.
How many trophies has Jose Mourinho won?
One of football’s great modern coaches, Mourinho has won a massive 26 titles since he started out in 2000 with Benfica.
That includes two Champions League titles, one with Porto in 2004 and another during a European treble with Inter Milan in 2010 – widely considered one of football’s greatest achievements.

He’s also the only coach to have won all three of the current European Cups, with two Europa Leagues and a Conference League.
On top of that, he has eight league titles across England, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

How many trophies did Jose Mourinho win at Real Madrid?
Despite Arbeloa’s claim that Mourinho is ‘number one’ at Real Madrid, the numbers don’t quite stack up.
His 2011/12 season at the Bernabeu was the stuff of legend, with a record for points (100), goals (121) and wins (32).
However, when it comes down to it, that LaLiga title was one of only three trophies Mourinho lifted in Madrid.
The other two were a Copa del Rey and Supercopa before things spiralled out of control with a dressing room split between high profile players such as Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos.
It can certainly argue that Mourinho took Madrid to a new level, moving Ramos to centre back and teaching Marcelo to defend, pieces of coaching genius that set Real up for future successes.
Yet his three honours puts him joint eighth on the all-time list for Madrid coaches.
That’s 12 fewer than Carlo Ancelotti’s 15 and eight fewer than Zinedine Zidane’s 11.

When was Jose Mourinho’s last title?
Despite an unbeaten league season with Benfica, Mourinho and the Eagles remarkably ended the campaign trophyless ahead of his exit.
That makes them one of just three teams in the history of Europe’s major leagues to go unbeaten and not win the title.
In fact, Benfica finished third and missed out on the Champions League, a feat no unbeaten team has ever achieved in Europe.

A serial winner, it hasn’t been usual for the 63-year-old to go trophyless, but it is becoming more normal.
Mourinho’s last title was 2022 – the Conference League with Roma.
After that he failed to end Galatasaray’s new dominance in Turkey during an eventful spell where he fell out with the board and fans for an unceremonious exit.
Benfica was up next, and it’s now four years since a title, with a five year break before his Roma success during an unsuccessful Premier League return with Tottenham.
However, let’s not forget Mourinho’s extraordinary success before that.
A domestic double with Porto in 2002/03 was followed by a European double the following year, leading to a switch to Chelsea and two more league titles.

His Inter success remains his greatest achievement, but the idea that his Madrid exit damaged him was written off by more impressive titles at Chelsea and Manchester United.
