It would have been one of the sporting stories of the year, but Herve Renard will not be appearing at AFCON 2024.
The two-time winner with Zambia and Ivory Coast was approached by the latter side after they sacked Jean-Louis Gasset.
Gasset paid the price for a disastrous group stage campaign, but Ivory Coast still snuck through as the lowest-ranked third-placed team due to other results on the final day of group action.
Now heading into the last 16, the African giants approached former coach Renard for a short-term deal.
However, the legendary coach of African teams is currently employed by the French women’s team, and the FFF have rejected the chance.
Philippe Diallo confirmed to RMC Sport: “Hervé Renard will not leave for AFCON.”
Diallo also admitted that they studied the possibility, but didn’t see it as feasible.
Renard is instead preparing for the summer Olympics in Paris, after confirming he will step down after the tournament.
