There’s yet another bombshell at Borussia Dortmund with CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke to step aside in 2025.
The legendary executive, who has been at the club since 2001, will not extend his current contract.
After joining BVB, Watzke went on to become CEO in 2005 and saved the team from financial oblivion.
He then went on to lead the team through its golden period under Jurgen Klopp, winning two Bundesliga titles and reaching the Champions League final.
Last season was a huge blow to Watzke’s tenure, with Dortmund bottling the title on the final day against Bayern Munich.
Since then there has been a reported power struggle between himself and other board members, particularly Sebastian Kehl who has been keen on replacing head coach Edin Terzic.
In a statement, BVB said: “Hans-Joachim Watzke, Chairman of the Management Board of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA, has appointed the Presidential Committee of the Advisory Board of Borussia Dortmund Unternehmensführungs-GmbH under the chairmanship of President Dr. Reinhold Lunow has been informed that he will no longer be extending his managing director employment contract, which currently runs until the end of 2025, and will be resigning from the management in autumn 2025.”
