Hakan Calhanoglu has disagreed with the president of the Turkish Football Federation [TFF] in the strongest terms.
Calhanoglu’s nation take on Kosovo for a spot in the World Cup having beaten Romania in the previous play-off round.
Speaking before that match, TFF president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu made it clear that he expected things to be simple for his side.
“It’s not good to boast, but let’s not go to America after failing to beat Romania, Kosovo, and Slovakia,” he said.
“I’ve always said it, some friends get offended, but I’m not calling anyone characterless, we have a very good team in terms of quality and character. They deserve everything.
“We got a very good draw in America. May God grant us to get through these two matches without any problems.”
Those comments were put to Calhanoglu, and he made it clear why the president was wrong given recent events with Inter Milan.
“Everyone has a different perspective. As a footballer, I’ve never underestimated any opponent in my life,” he responded at a press conference.
“We were eliminated by Bodo/Glimt with Inter [in the Champions League]. That’s why we don’t underestimate any opponent.
“The president’s perspective is different. There’s one last 90-minute match left.
“Tomorrow, it’s not just the quality that will win, but the one who puts their heart on the line. We’re ready.”
