Over 100 female footballers from 24 countries have addressed Gianni Infantino and FIFA in a letter.
The letter, uncovered by El Pais, asks FIFA to end its sponsorship deal with Saudi-owned oil company Aramco due to “the systematic oppression of women and homosexuals in that country”.
The letter was reportedly signed by 106 players who denounce “the regime’s brutal reputation on human rights,” stressing that “its treatment of women speaks for itself,” and add that the contract is “a punch in the gut for women’s football.”
FIFA‘s contract with Aramco was signed in April last year and is worth a reported €92million per-year. The company will also be one of the main sponsors of the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA are yet to respond to the letter, but a spokesperson told El Pais that the deal contributes to ‘the development of women’s football’.
They did not respond to the accusation that the oil company is responsible for an “enormous impact on climate change”.
