As far as publicity stunts go, Gerard Pique’s latest for the King’s League is rather clever.
The Barcelona legend and founder of the seven-a-side entertainment football league is seeing his product grow, and making sure that the next big thing gets full coverage.
In January The Kings World Cup Nations will take place as teams of former pros, YouTubers and celebrities face off representing their own countries.
And if Pique has his way, a professional team will be there too.
In a trailer, the former defender invites Barcelona’s city rivals Espanyol to play a friendly against the Spain team where the loser will pay the winner €1million.
Obviously Espanyol would win, but given their relegation status in LaLiga and their lack of finances, it may be hard for them to turn down the publicity stunt.
In his letter, Pique writes to the club owner Chen Yansheng saying: “The Kings World Cup Nations will be held in Italy from January 1st, with the final at Juventus Stadium on January 12th.
“In order to prepare for the Spanish national team, we want to invite a rival of our level to play a Kings-style match.
“Therefore, taking advantage of the Christmas break, we have thought of the Espanyol first team.
“To provide an incentive, we are willing to bet the sum of one million euros that the loser will have to pay to the winner.
“Looking forward to your prompt response. Sincerely, Gerard Piqué.”
The Spanish King’s League team so far only has Iker Casillas as an ex-pro, with the rest of the team made up of YouTubers.
However, there will be some professionals elsewhere, with Neymar and Mario Gotze signed up to play for their countries.
