Mainz’s Dominik Kohr has found yet another enemy in Strasbourg’s Gary O’Neil.
The two sides faced off in the Conference League quarter-finals which was won by the French team who overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2.
Things could’ve been far worse for Mainz, though, given that they probably should’ve been reduced to 10 men early on.
The incredibly unpopular Kohr was at his worse when he floored Diego Moreira in the 19th minute.
O’Neil fumes
Replays showed a brutal elbow, and O’Neil was sure of it in real time.
“It’s crazy! It’s crazy!” he repeated in footage fromCanal+. “He should go to prison. He’s bad.
“It was an elbow, it was with the elbow.”
Despite his complaints the refereeing team refused to check the incident with VAR.
Strasbourg scored minutes later, though, before Kohr later gave away a penalty.
Why Kohr is hated
Kohr has had nine Bundesliga red cards in his career and took the headlines when he went in high and late on Hoffenheim’s Max Moerstedt in November.
One of those fuming was Schalke legend Olaf Thon.
He said: “I myself have often played against opponents who overdid it with their approach; in a way, that’s certainly part of the contact sport of football, and you sometimes have to put up with a lot.
“But a line is crossed when you constantly endanger the health of your opponents.
“I think it’s time to make an example of him. In this exceptional case, I consider a ban of up to twelve weeks for the Mainz defender absolutely appropriate.
“Kohr has long had a reputation for deliberately wanting to hurt his opponents.”
