One of the highest-rated coaches outside of Europe, Filipe Luis has brutally been sacked by Flamengo despite a glory-filled 18 months.
The former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea left back won essentially every title on offer during his short stint with the club, including the glory of the Copa Libertadores and Brasileirão Série A.
This year things haven’t been as positive, with Flamengo in the midst of their worst start to the season in a decade.
They have four points in three league games and overall have suffered five defeats in 12 matches.
They also lost the Brazilian Super Cup against Corinthians (2-0) and the Recopa Sudamericana, falling in both legs of the final against Argentinian side Lanús.
Still, the decision seems like one of the most brutal of the modern game, with Filipe Luis widely regarded as Diego Simeone’s successor as former club Atleti.
Flamengo confirm Filipe Luis sacking
In a statement, Flamengo said: “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday (3), Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team.
“Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club along with him.
“Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luís for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey.
“The club wishes him success and the best of luck in the continuation of his professional career.”
Filipe Luis last match in the dugout was a mammoth 8-0 win over Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca.
Asked about his future post-match, he said: “Whatever happens, if I’m not here tomorrow, my love for Flamengo will always exist.
“I have no doubt that I have lived the best years of my life here.”
Even Florentino Perez thinks it was too soon.
