After a trio of awkward press conference scenes, FIFA’s reasoning for stopping Spanish questions has now been revealed.
World class talents Vinicius Jr, Frenkie de Jong and Achraf Hakimi have all been stopped from speaking Spanish by officials in awkward scenes.
The scenes have provoked plenty of bafflement, with De Jong and Hakimi both awkwardly shut down when told they’re happy to answer in Spanish or English.
Yet press officers have instead rejected the Spanish question, telling reporters they must either communicate in English or the language of the country playing.
El Pais now report that FIFA only allow questions in Spanish at matches played in the USA if Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay are participating.
Translators won’t be provided for the other countries, meaning it’s either English or local language.
The news has caused plenty of outrage on social media, particularly when Vinicius Jr was left annoyed by the scenes as he wasn’t comfortable communicating in English and preferred either Portuguese or Spanish.
