Fenerbahce president Ali Koc has put his good relationship with Jose Mourinho in jeopardy with some bold comments about his Benfica switch.
Koc fired Mourinho at the end of August after Fener were knocked out of the Champions League in the final qualifying round by Benfica.
Less than a month later Mourinho has arrived in Lisbon to sign for the Portuguese giants, and Koc raised his suspicions.
Joking on TRT Spor, he said: “Mourinho is such a brilliant man that he predicted Benfica’s defeat against Qarabag. He even calculated that Bruno Lage would be fired.
“Mário Branco (ex-Fenerbahce sporting director, now at Benfica) was there too, they had a plan… “
Although Koc wasn’t completely serious with his comments, they still found their way to Mourinho who responded strongly after touching down in Lisbon.
I don’t look for excuses when I leave a club. Ali Koc has a different way of doing things,” he said.
“He never explained why Kerem Aktürkoğlu (who switched Benfica for Fener) was only bought after we had been eliminated.”
