‘Idiot’ Valencia player criticised by his own teammates after goading of fans during win

Eray Comert has probably made better decisions in his life.

The Swiss defender was part of a Valencia squad that achieved a rare high during another dire season, beating city rivals Levante 2-0.

Yet post-match he made it all about himself, draping a Valencia shirt over a Levante corner flag and holding it up at the furious home fans.

Rather hilariously, Comert has since apologised, saying he didn’t intend to humiliate the fans. What else was he doing?!

“I would like to clarify that under no circumstances did I intend to humiliate Levante or its fans,” he wrote on social media.

“I know these are difficult weeks for Levante as well, and I understand that some people may have interpreted it as a lack of respect and were upset.

“It was a reaction born from the emotions of a derby and the joy and satisfaction that winning this game brings us, given our current situation.”

Despite Comert being whacked by a bottle thrown from the home end, even his teammates instead chose to condemn him.

“We have to apologise because it was our turn to celebrate, and we show all our respect to Levante and we apologise,” César Tárrega said.

“We went to celebrate with our fans, and a certain gesture didn’t go down well, as is to be expected.

“We have to be aware of where we’re celebrating and also what stadium we’re celebrating in, the city we’re in, and the situation the other team is in.”

Pundits condemn Valencia star

Describing the scenes live, radio commentator Fran Guaita said: “What are some players thinking? Where are you going to grab the Levante flag? You have to be an idiot.”

Dani Garrido added: “Comert decided to take one of Levante’s pennants and drape it with a Valencia shirt to celebrate.

“Among all the crazy things you can do on a football pitch, why do that?

“This doesn’t justify sheep responding with bottles. It’s obvious that Comert shouldn’t do that. It’s a provocation that shouldn’t be met with bottles, but you shouldn’t try to hit him with them either.

“Comert can’t do what he did; he has to understand that he has a social and sporting responsibility and that there’s a tense atmosphere between Levante and Valencia. You can’t invite people to throw things at you.”
