It turns out Diego Simeone’s apology to Vinicius Jr wasn’t as heartfelt as we may have thought.
Having taunted the Real Madrid winger from the touchlines in the Supercopa semi-finals at the start of January, the Atletico Madrid coach was right back at it.
Facing Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, this time he picked on Lamine Yamal during a first-half demolition job.
Atleti trounced Barca to win the first leg 4-0, but when the scoreline was 3-0, unseen footage has shown Simeone talking to Lamine, with some even claiming he held up three fingers.
Later in the match there was also a scuffle at the touchline which Lamine was front-and-centre of, suggesting Simeone’s tactics may have worked.
What did Diego Simeone say to Vinicius Jr?
Simeone was caught provoking Vini during the Supercopa semis on January 12th and cameras claimed he said “Florentino wants you out,” referring to an ongoing contract dispute between the Madrid president and the Brazilian.
Later Simone apologised, saying: “First of all, I’d like to apologise to Florentino and Vinicius for what happened.
“It’s not right of me to put myself in that position, and I obviously accept that I was wrong.
“The team that wins is the one that deserves to go through, so that’s all.”
Lesson learned? Obviously not…
