Ronald Koeman had a full Netherlands squad ahead of their last 32 World Cup clash with Morocco.
The Dutch saw a number of players drop out injured before the tournament, but the news is very positive for Koeman before facing the 2022 semi-finalists.
There was also incredibly sad news, as striker Cody Gakpo announced he and his girlfriend Noa van der Bij lost their baby son during pregnancy.
Gakpo family statement
In a joint statement, the couple said: “With a broken heart, we share the terrible news that our little boy passed away during pregnancy.
“Thank you for all the love and support.
“We went to church to light a candle. Afterwards, we went with our son Samuel to the church playground. There was another child there too. His name was Elijah [the same name they planned for the new son].
“God could not have given us a more beautiful sign. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”
Before the loss, Gakpo spoke about the role of religion in his life and in the squad, where he leads a prayer group of 11 players.
“We talk about faith and we pray together,” he said.
“I often lead the prayer, that’s true. But everyone has their own role. The group of guys is also getting bigger and bigger.
“It fosters togetherness, both on and off the field. We give each other strength.
“We also talk about what is on our minds, what is bothering us. It is without obligation. If you don’t feel connected to it, that is perfectly fine too, of course.
“We sometimes have a Zoom call with Pastor Freddie as well. He speaks then. It gives us strength.”
Dutch FA comment on Gakpo’s loss
In a statement, the Dutch federation [KNVB] said: “This is a very sad private situation.
“Naturally, we were already aware of this, and the KNVB is trying to support the family wherever possible.
“Cody has decided, in consultation with his girlfriend, to stay with the group.
“We respect their privacy and therefore will not comment further on the situation, including the way we are trying to support them.
“We will also not provide any further information on this matter in the near future. If anything is shared about this, it is up to the family themselves.”
Strike partner Brain Brobbey was the first player to comment on the loss.
“We’ve known for a few days already,” he said. “We’re just trying to be there for him.
“If he needs us, we’re there for him. If he needs space, we’re there for him too.
“The coaches, the players; everyone is trying to be there for him now.
“It’s obviously nice that he’s staying with us. He is a very important player for us. I think we’ve managed to move forward together very well.”
A fully fit squad is a huge boost for Koeman, who saw four players drop out before the tournament.
Emmanuel Emegha and Xavi Simons were ruled out before being joined by Matthijs de Ligt and Jurrien Timber.
Nevertheless, the Dutch have been in fine form with three wins from three.
