Brazil recorded their worst-ever World Cup qualifying finish, and Carlo Ancelotti wasn’t happy about it.
The five-time champions had already qualified for next year’s tournament, but a 1-0 defeat away to Bolivia in their final match meant they finished fifth – their worst-ever in qualifying.
Ancelotti undoubtedly isn’t to blame for such a record, having only arrived for the final four games of qualifying, winning two and drawing the other.
Yet the Real Madrid legend still showed a rare moment of ill-discipline at half-time when he confronted the referee after a penalty decision that decided the match.
Ancelotti held back post-match, sarcastically saying: “The match was special in many ways…
“The VAR awarded a penalty… there are things that can be improved.”
The president of the Brazilian football federation, Samir Xaud, wasn’t as charitable.
“We played against the referee, the police, and the ball boys,” he said.
“The moment they converted the penalty, we knew the game would be over.
“The ball boys’ behaviour was shameful, and the police’s behaviour was as brutal as that of the Bolivian delegation. Besides, you can’t play at this altitude.”
