There was a tense mix up for one of Brazil’s best ever defenders, Marcelo, at the World Cup opener.
The five-time Champions League winner was attending Mexico’s win over South Africa, but found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time post-match.
MARCA report that upon leaving the Azteca, Marcelo was caught in a violent clash between protesters and local authorities.
They add that the situation ‘became dangerous’ for the ex-fullback, who needed police evacuation.
Officers are said to have acted quickly to withdraw him from the mele, and he was thankfully unharmed.
For Marcelo’s part, he seemed to recover quickly, later posting pictures of him smiling in hospitality at the match.
Mexican protests explained
Clashes between the public and police started pre-match and continued after.
A spokesperson for the police said: “Nearly 200 hooded individuals broke away from two groups of around 800 protesters, but the situation was brought under control by the Metropolitan police.”
