Borussia Dortmund advisor and Ballon d’Or winner Matthias Sammer has scolded his side over their reaction to Nico Schlotterbeck’s critique of his teammates.
Schlotterbeck called out BVB‘s substitutes (Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy) for their lack of effort in a Champions League draw with Bodo/Glimt saying he expects full intensity from players who play fewer minutes.
The conflict was played down by club officials and executives, and Sammer suggested it’s a lack of winning mentality to always look for harmony.
“If this weren’t Borussia Dortmund’s problem and everyone saw it, then we wouldn’t have this problem. It’s really quite simple,” he told Sky Germany.
“There are people who have wonderful character traits, but no leadership qualities. That’s naturally alarming at first.
“The club certainly doesn’t lack harmony. Borussia Dortmund craves harmony. That’s also what defines the club in its connection, in its love for the peopl.
“However, if BVB wants to take the next step, constructive criticism will improve the club.”
He finished on Schlotterbeck: “But it was the truth. We have to stop blurring the truth in the end, so that those who speak the truth end up being the fools.
“I thought what he said was wonderful. He spoke the truth, and a leader is allowed to do that, must do that, it’s his job.”
