The Belgian Pro League became the first major European league to begin its 2025/26 season, but it was instantly met with controversy.
UEFA’s eighth-ranked division kicked off on Friday with Royal Antwerp FC drawing 1-1 with defending champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise at home.
Vincent Janssen should have been the story with a delightful free kick the first goal of the season, but sadly it was overshadowed by a pair of his Antwerp fans.
Promise David was earlier given the chance to open the scoring via the penalty spot when a clear hand ball was penalised, but his effort was saved.
Footage from the moment quickly went viral as it appeared to show an Antwerp fan making a monkey gesture to the Canadian only for a youngster beside him to join in.
Antwerp said in a statement: “During our match against Union, footage showed two ‘fans’ making racist gestures towards Promise David of Union.
“RAFC distances itself from this reprehensible behaviour and strongly condemns it.
“Together with the relevant authorities, we will do everything we can to identify the perpetrators and punish them appropriately.”
Broadcaster DAZN also released a statement, saying: “We collected the footage and delivered it to Royal Antwerp FC and the police via the Pro League.
“Racism has no place in our football.”
