Having spent almost two decades at the very highest level in football, former Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu is now working at an Intersport shop.
Pictures went viral of the 41-year-old posing for pictures in a bib of the Decathlon competitor shop.
Now confirming that it’s not a publicity stunt, the company told Lesviolets: “Jeremy is an employee of the Intersport Cabriès – Plan de Campagne store, located in the Marseille region.
“He is not the director, but simply employed in the football department.”
Having started out in Ligue 1 with Sochaux in 2002, Mathieu joined Toulouse and then became a fan favourite in LaLiga with Valencia from 2009 to 2014.
So reliable was the versatile left-back and centre-back that Barcelona signed him in 2014 and he won eight honours including the Champions League and two LaLiga titles.
He then joined Portuguese giants Sporting to end his career, claiming another three titles before retiring in 2020.
Mathieu also collected five France caps from 2011 to 2016.
