Barcelona legend Gerard Pique has appeared at the Majadahonda Court over irregularities in a deal to get the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.
Pique protested his innocence and reportedly broke down in tears during the appearance, during which he said he’d suffered “three years of reputational damage in the press that are priceless.”
As per Record.pt: The former central defender is being investigated for the role of his company, Kosmos, in brokering the deal between the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Saudi public company SELA.
The Saudis acquired the rights to the competition for €40 million per year for ten years, and Piqué charged an annual commission of €4 million for facilitating the transaction.
The prosecution alleges that the former Catalan defender made a “gentleman’s agreement” with Luis Rubiales, former president of the RFEF, to split the prize money between them, something that both promptly denied.
It is worth noting that the deal was sealed in 2020, when the former international was still playing for Barça, which was one of the teams that would compete in the Super Cup, which could imply a conflict of interest.
Pique was approached by the press before and after entering court, but refused to comment.
