If you’re wondering what Andres Iniesta is up to, he’s still playing football at the age of 40.
The Barcelona legend left Spain in 2018 and became an icon at Vissel Kobe and spent five years with the Japanese side leaving in 2023.
He looked almost certain to retire upon his departure but instead joined UAE Pro League outfit Emirates Club in the summer of 2023.
Now though, Iniesta has been relegated for the first time in his career. Emirates Club had a shocking campaign, winning just four games and picking up 17 points in 25 matches, leading to their relegation with one game to spare.
Former Spain international Paco Alcacer was also unable to stop the relegation despite his six goals, with Iniesta just behind on five.
Despite that day from hell, just 24 hours later Iniesta got his first career statue in Albacete. The statue depicts Iniesta’s iconic match-winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final.
Erected at the Soliss Foundation the unveiling came as the Spanish Sports Press Association celebrates its XLIII National Sports Gala.
In attendance was the winning coach at that World Cup, Vicente del Bosque, but Iniesta wasn’t present, perhaps due to his relegation.
Instead unveiling the statue was his father, José Antonio, who said. “André has made a huge effort to be able to come but at the last moment things have not turned out the way we wanted.”
