Legendary AFCON coach Claude Le Roy has suggested that African countries should boycott the 2026 World Cup.
The 1988 winner with Cameroon was present for Senegal’s win over Morocco where he spoke to Sadio Mane during the victor’s walk-off.
Having coached a multitude of African side and and nine AFCON tournaments, Le Roy L’Equipe took the chance to talk to the legend about his thoughts on the current game.
When asked about the 2026 World Cup in the Americas, he responded: “He (Donald Trump) is damaging Africa by killing NGOs (non-governmental organisations). That’s the tragedy of this continent.
“I attended the CAF press conference, I wanted to speak several times, but I was never given a microphone because everyone knew I certainly wouldn’t be accommodating. My fight isn’t over yet.
“I wonder if we shouldn’t call for a boycott of the 2026 World Cup, given Donald Trump’s behaviour towards the African continent, with a FIFA president boasting of being on his side.
“The leaders at the highest level of football never talk about football anymore, only about money,” he said.
