Fabio Capello has given an brutal takedown of former side AC Milan.
Capello won the Champions League and Serie A with Milan as a player and coach, but has since seen his old side fall into chaos.
Milan looked like title challengers for much of the 2025/26 season, but ended up fifth and out of Europe’s top tier.
In response, head coach Max Allegri was fired, along with the three men above him, the sporting director, technical director and CEO.
That complete void of leadership seems to have been filled by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is reportedly chasing Andoni Iraola.
The ex-Bournemouth coach is also being pursued by Liverpool, and Capello has no idea why he would even think of joining Milan instead.
Irola to Milan is a no-go
“Iraola? And why would he want Milan?” he asked.
“His teams play really well, Bournemouth have been a surprise since the start of the Premier League.
“He’s coaching in England, in the most important tournament of all. And what would he leave for?
“Unfortunately, we no longer have any appeal. Instead, he knows full well that with another positive year like this and with some favourable coincidences, he could soon find himself at the helm of a top club fighting for the Premier League title.”
Instead, Capello thinks Milan need to sort out the director roles first.
Assessing the club’s disaster, he commented: “The biggest mistake is that no one has been able to understand the reason for this collapse.
“Why has the team lost only one game in the first 25 matchdays, and seven in the last 13? Before firing everyone, we needed to find a reason.
“If we identify it, then we’re on the right track. Otherwise, we can’t make decisions; there’s no point in cutting heads.
“Either whoever arrives is a magician and waves a magic wand, or I don’t know.
“Before judging Allegri’s work or that of the potential names being floated as his successor, AC Milan needs to build a management team that’s up to the task.
“The names I hear don’t reassure me, quite the opposite. I read about possible English or American sporting directors when the Italian ones are absolutely excellent.
“But why? Incredible. It’s like being at the Eastern European fair. I’m shocked.”
Juventus right to stick with Spalletti
Capello then took on another of his former sides, Juventus, who have stuck with sporting director Damien Comolli and head coach Luciano Spalletti despite also crashing out of Champions League qualification.
“I’m convinced that’s the right path,” he said. “Obviously, everyone there is aware of what they did wrong.
“The Champions League slipped away at the start of the season and at the end, but in between there were several positive things.
“Under Spalletti, important foundations were laid. They know where to put their hands, now they have to sit down and figure out which are the best players to bring in to remedy certain shortcomings.
“For next season, there’s no point beating around the bush: no excuses, Juve will have to fight for the Scudetto. “
