Key Sevilla defender Marcao has been given a whopping six-game suspension for his outburst against referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz.

Sevilla lost 2-0 to Real Madrid on December 20th and Marcao received a second yellow card in the 68th minute for a slam-dunk foul.

Yet he reacted in startling fashion, confronting Muñiz Ruiz face-to-face and shouting at him.

Assessing the situation, the RFEF’s Disciplinary Committee have settled on six games.

The breakdown of the punishment includes a one-match ban for the double yellow card and subsequent sending-off, four matches for insults, verbal abuse, and abusive behaviour directed at the referee, and an additional match for conduct contrary to good sporting order.

The decision was made in conjunction with the referee’s report which read: “Marcao confronted me at close range to my face in an intimidating manner, and had to be removed by his teammates.

“When he was separated, he addressed me in the following terms: ‘Fillo da puta madre’, heading towards the tunnel to the changing rooms where he kicked a ball that was in the fourth official’s area.”

Sevilla will appeal, but at best will only get a one-game reduction for kicking a ball away.

Marcao will be out until mid-February with Sevilla already short in defence.
