Dutch FA respond to tirade of criticism over forcing Jong Ajax to play despite death of player's girlfriend

The Dutch Football Association [KNVB] have responded to immense anger over their call to make Jong Ajax play through tragedy.

The Dutch second tier side lost 2-0 to RKC Waalwijk just days after the death of Mark Verkuijl’s girlfriend.

Verkuijl’s 21-year-old girlfriend, Elisa, died last Thursday after being hit by a car while jogging in Ede, and despite a request not to play, Ajax had to.

An incredibly emotional Verkuijl attended the match with her name on an Ajax shirt, and the KNVB came in for plenty of critique.

“First and foremost, it is terrible that Mark Verkuijl’s girlfriend died in an accident,” a spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with Jong Ajax player Mark Verkuijl, his family and in-laws, friends and loved ones, and with his teammates and staff.

“In situations like these, it’s an extremely difficult decision whether or not matches should go ahead.

“We understand that such decisions raise questions and debate, as they inevitably touch on emotions, circumstances, and people.

“We have a policy in place where matches are generally only postponed in the event of the death of a player or staff member.

“This doesn’t change the fact that this remains a difficult decision and doesn’t diminish the seriousness of what has happened; this is a deeply moving and sad event.
