It’s long been said that you shouldn’t sign a player off the back of an international campaign, and it’s looking like Dani Olmo may experience that to a surprising degree.
The star of Spain’s winning campaign was instantly linked to numerous sides after his leading three goals and two assists in Germany, and things seemed to crystalise around contenders Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Atletico Madrid.
Those four teams had the option to take a deal out of RB Leipzig‘s hands with Olmo’s contract containing a €60million release clause. However, that expired a week ago without a sniff.
BILD report that all interested parties deemed the figure too high, and with Leipzig still asking for a similar amount even without the clause, things have reached an impasse.
Mundo Deportivo add that Barca pitched €40m with a further €20m in bonuses, but that offer was rejected out of hand.
Bayern’s interest seems complicated by Uli Hoeness admitting they don’t have any money left, while for City, an offer was contingent on Kevin De Bruyne departing, something Pep Guardiola has now ruled out.
Olmo’s injury history isn’t great either, playing 96 out of a possible 146 games in the past three seasons, and with a contract that runs until 2027, it’s looking increasingly likely that he may be priced out of a move.
