Nuri Sahin hasn’t gotten off to the best start as Borussia Dortmund manager, with a 1-1 draw against Aue followed up by a 4-0 defeat away to Thai side BG Pathum United.
BVB were appalling in the match, constantly making mistakes at the back, and getting caught out in midfield as they tried to build up play through the centre of the pitch.
That saw more experienced played like Felix Nmech and Niklas Sule repeatedly caught out, and Sahin didn’t hold back in the aftermath.
“I know that the boys are very tired, that we have trained a lot. But that can’t be an excuse,” he said. “We still can’t lose 4-0.
“It’s clear that if you lose the ball, it can go back the other way. We are very high and open. We are working on that.
“I didn’t like the defence at all. And if you get the basics wrong, then you will be punished at this level.”
He continued: “I spoke to the team in the dressing room very openly and honestly and also very critically. Just because they were tired, we can’t say: ‘forget about it’.
“What really annoyed and bothered me today were the basics. They have nothing to do with whether your legs are heavy. They have to be right. And if you don’t do the basics, you won’t play.”
