The results of Kicker’s annual Bundesliga player survey are in, and it’s not a good look for Naby Keita.
The German magazine published its much-anticipated anonymous poll of top-flight players, and 26% voted Keita as the biggest disappointment of the season.
The Guinea midfielder joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer from Liverpool on huge wages, but played just 107 minutes, fewer than the 177 he managed for his country at AFCON in January.
He also created bad headlines when the club accused him of refusing to play against champions Bayer Leverkusen in April, apparently angry that he was named on the bench.
Keita refuted those allegations but was suspended for the remainder of the season.
Also coming out badly from the poll was Nenad Bjelica who was voted coaching flop of the season. The Croatian arrived at Union Berlin in November to replace long-time coach Urs Fischer, but after a decent start he was sacked for leading the side back into a relegation battle. He is also perhaps best known for an apparent headbutt on Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane in January.
On the positive side of things, Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz was voted the player of the season by 51% of participants, while his manager Xabi Alonso won coach of the season with a huge 60%.
The biggest surprise may have been the response to who will win Euro 2024, with Germany coming out favourites with 39% of the vote, ahead of France on 22% and England on 15%.
