The footballing schedule could face a groundbreaking overhaul, according to Barcelona manager Xavi.
The Barça legend saw key midfielder Gavi pick up a long-term ACL injury during the most recent international break, ruling him out for the rest of the season and Euro 2024 for Spain.
Gavi is yet another youngster to be overloaded by the number of games for club and country, with PSG starlet Warren Zaire-Emery also picking up a long-term injury on his France debut.
The current football schedule for the majority of world football sees the August to May club season paused on four occasions for international football to take place.
These matches are often qualifiers, with friendlies in place if not, while the Nations League has added more summer games.
That could all change, according to Xavi, who has said FIFA is discussing having nine months of club football followed by two months of internationals.
He explained to the press, “FIFA is already considering spending nine or eight months in a row at the club, and then whoever has to go to the national team should go for two months.
“This way, they would save a lot of trips: nine months with the club, two months with the national team, and one on vacation.”
