Struggling at Tottenham, it turns out that Xavi Simons wasn’t good enough for Bayern Munich.
The Dutch attacker lit up the Bundesliga with Leipzig, but no one was quite convinced enough that his talents would translate at a big club.
That is except for Vincent Kompany, who requested his arrival during the summer.
Honorary president Uli Hoeness revealed the conversation, and how he rather amusingly shut it down.
“I had ordered an apple pie, or rather, it was already on the table,” he began on a podcast.
“And I said: ‘Vince, you can have another piece of apple pie, but you’re not getting Xavi.’”
Confirming the story, Kompany said: “There’s one thing I can perhaps tell you – and I also said this to Mr. Hoeneß at that moment: ‘At that age, you would have pushed just the same way.’
“And after that, we ate apple pie and everything was fine.”
As funny as the story is, it does bring up some questions about how active Hoeness still is at Bayern when he’s just meant to be employed in a non-executive role.
“It’s a completely normal process, lots of communication,” Kompany said in defense.
“You’ll have to ask [sporting directors] Christoph and Max what we do in the next transfer window.
“They always asked me: ‘Vinnie, what’s your thoughts in these situations?’
“I’m involved at the very end, to give it a try. That’s all there is to it.”
“We’re a very active group together: Christoph, Max , Jan, and me. We’re a very active group within the club and always try to convince people.
“But this always happens in a good atmosphere and with a lot of respect.”
