Rafael Louzán or Luis Rubliales?
The president of Spain’s football federation has bizarrely come to the defence of the country’s former prime minister in direct opposition with his players.
Mariano Rajoy had earlier taken up plenty of negative headlines, writing about Spain’s World Cup semi-final opponents: “France also has a very high-level squad. That said, without any French players.
“And they play very well. They will be a formidable opponent.”
Louzán has now sought to play down the racist comments, telling Cadena SER: “He is a very close friend, Rajoy’s words may have been taken out of context.”
The comments came despite a superb response from Lamine Yamal earlier in the day.
Asked about the ex-PM’s words, he said: “Well, I think that we’re going to play one of the most beautiful matches that can be played at a World Cup.
“I don’t think this is the right moment to talk about that. But if football serves any purpose, it’s to bring people together and to help integration within society.
“And there is no better example than France and us. We are examples of integration, and in the end that’s what football is about – not talking about what someone else may have said.”
