It’s fair to say Robin van Persie has friends in the media.
The Premier League great was sacked by Feyenoord earlier this week, perhaps overdue after a horror season.
The Rotterdam side finished second in the Eredivisie, but only due to the performances of others, racking up the lowest-ever points total for a runner-up.
Van Persie teetered on the brink of being sacked throughout the campaign, but survived up until the appointment of a new management structure.
New technical director Devy Rigaux arrived from Club Brugge and quickly got to work calling time on Van Persie, a decision the country’s most notorious football pundit wasn’t happy about.
Van der Vaart lays into Feyenoord
Van Persie’s former teammate, Rafael van der Vaart, commented on Ziggo: “It really is a disgrace.
“He is a club icon and maybe things didn’t go perfectly, but they still finished second.
“And I think that, if you achieve that with so many injuries, I would have wanted to give him a little more time.
“Now some snot-nosed kid comes from Belgium, he gives a press conference, and in it, he basically indicates that they are going to evaluate him.
“At that point, everyone already felt that he was going to be let go.”
Another of Van Persie’s former teammates, Wesley Sneijder, joined in.
“I also think it’s really terrible,” he commented.
“But I also think it’s disastrous of the club itself. If you finish second with such a squad, that is really impressive.
“You can say that the competition wasn’t good, but you still finish second, and I believe that was Feyenoord’s objective as well.”
