Robin van Persie has started 2026 at Feyenoord by switching to his third captain of the season.
Ahead of opening the year against the last team he coached, Heerenveen, he announced that Sem Steijn has been stripped of the armband.
Goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther will take the role that was Quinten Timber’s at the start of the season.
Arsenal-linked Timber lost the armband when it became clear he wouldn’t sign a new contract and would leave for free at the end of the campaign.
He’s since admitted he could leave the club this January so that Feyenoord can pocket a fee.
Van Persie, though, has other concerns with Feyenoord now 11 points behind leaders PSV in the Eredivisie and virtually out of the Europa League.
Announcing his captaincy switch, he commented: “Sem was disappointed, but that’s how we’re going to do it.
“I would have liked to have Sem as second captain, but he wants to focus on his own performance.
“And so Anis Hadj Moussa and Givairo Read are once again number two and three on the list.”
