Riyad Mahrez might be a PSG fan.
The Al Ahli winger has given his case for Ligue 1 after one of his colleagues kept on dismissing it.
Al Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo has regularly said the Saudi Pro League is better than the French top flight, which, naturally, would put it on a par with Europe’s traditional ‘big five leagues’.
Mahrez has won the Premier League with Manchester City and Leicester, and is also one of a handful of players to win the European Champions League and Asian Champions League.
But in his qualified opinion, it isn’t currently that close.
“The five big European leagues are ahead, and after that we can start to compete with the other leagues,” he said.
“We are not too far away, I think. After that, the goal is not to be the best championship in the world right now. We are on a long-term vision.
“Those like me who have arrived, we are here at the beginning of this adventure, we are a bit like precursors. We are helping them to make this league stronger.
“And frankly, over my two seasons, I have felt a progression in the teams, the coaches, the tactics and the organization. They are trying to get there, and I think they will get there. “
