Amateur German referee Pascal Kaiser made some heart-warming headlines on January 30th when he proposed to his boyfriend at a Cologne Bundesliga match.
Yet just a week on from the scenes at the RheinEnergieStadion, Kaiser was attacked outside of his home.
L’Equipe report that a day earlier he had received threats mentioning his address, to which he alerted the police.
The police told Kaiser he was under no immediate danger, but 20 minutes later while outside in his garden, he says three men were waiting and attacked him.
The referee himself has drawn a direct link between the attack and his marriage proposal, believing he was targeted because of this public act.
