Carlo Ancelotti’s comments about Real Madrid turning down the Club World Cup went global, only for the legendary manager to reject them.
In an interview with Il Giornale, Ancelotti was quoted as saying that Real and other clubs would reject the expanded tournament as the prize money isn’t enough.
However, after the comments hit every sports website in the world, Ancelotti wrote to his 3.8million Twitter followers that his ‘words were not interpreted the way I intended’.
A claim of misinterpretation seemed unlikely as the interview was done in his native Italian, and the journalist who conducted it, Tony Damascelli, has sensationally said that Ancelotti’s been set up.
“The words collected in the interview are faithful to those spoken by Carlo,” he began.
“FIFA fulfilled its usual mission of silencing dissent, and Real Madrid preferred not to go to war and Ancelotti had to accept not the denial, which honours him, but the lack of understanding.
“To avoid an international scandal, the club published this text on the coach’s profile.
“I did the interview on Saturday and I confirm word for word what was published. Ancelotti told me: ‘We are not going to the Club World Cup because it is total nonsense on an economic, sporting and health level of the players’.
“It was an informal interview, we talked about other things that I will not publish to avoid another misunderstanding.”
