Fresh off of stepping up as Real Madrid’s captain following Luka Modric’s retirement, Dani Carvajal is back mixing politics and sport.
The right back was presented with one of the highest honours in the Spanish capital – the Medalla de Oro de la Comunidad de Madrid – for his serial winning with his country and club.
Yet it’s now emerged that he invited members of Spain’s far-right Vox party to attend the ceremony.
Spokesperson Isabel Pérez Moñino posted a photo with Carvajal along with the caption: “Today we proudly attended the presentation of the Gold Medal of the Madrid Community to Dani Carvajal, where not only a great sportsman has been recognized, but also a reference to the values that build a strong nation.
“Example of work, effort, discipline, love for Spain and commitment to its Madrid roots. Values that we defend and that should inspire new generations.”
Not a first for Carvajal
Carvajal infamously previously invited members of Vox to sit in his VIP box at the Bernabeu, while after Euro 2024 he went viral for his cold reaction to Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez.
Politics aside, Carvajal can certainly be accused of hypocrisy, having told future teammate Kylian Mbappe to keep his views to himself as the far-right were excelling in the French polls during Euro 2024.
