Pablo Fornals summed up the mood in LaLiga over Storm Dana with a teary post-match interview after scoring in a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao.
The Valencia-born midfielder scored the opener and instantly burst into tears before heading to the bench to pick up a shirt paying tribute to the victims of the storm and flooding.
Over 200 people have been confirmed dead and many more are expected, and now many are expressing their anger at the authorities for not reacting properly or quickly enough.
There was also anger in LaLiga with multiple big voices, including Hansi Flick and Diego Simeone, saying the weekend’s action should have been postponed.
Fornals summed up the feeling speaking post-match, and visibly had tears rolling down his face as he discussed the disaster.
“We cannot control what the environment has in store for us, but I think we can control how things are done,” he said criticising the response.
“I’m sorry if I get emotional, but I experienced it with a lot of anger. We all have acquaintances, friends… We are close and we have many friends helping out there.
“I think today was not a day to celebrate anything, neither football nor goals. Even though we had to play, at least I hope to have given people a good night of counterattacks and football.
“This was the closest thing to the Premier League that I have experienced since I returned. Lots of encouragement to the victims, relatives and everyone.”
