First it was Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann, now Ralf Rangnick has rejected the chance to become Bayern Munich‘s next manager.
The Bundesliga record champions seemed to have finally sealed their Thomas Tuchel replacement, only for Rangnick to back out at the final hour.
The hugely-respected 65-year-old will instead stay in his post as manager of the Austrian national team for Euro 2024 and beyond.
In a public statement, Rangnick said: “I am the Austrian team boss with all my heart. I really enjoy this task and am determined to successfully continue on our chosen path.
“I would like to expressly emphasize that this is not a rejection of FC Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals.
“Our full concentration is on the European Championships. We will do everything we can to get as far as possible!”
According to Sport1, on Monday Bayern thought an agreement was imminent with final details to be ironed out on Tuesday, before Rangnick changed his mind on Wednesday.
Rangnick is said to have been concerned about Bayern’s image in recent weeks, while he didn’t want to oversee changes to the squad and staff while focusing on Euro 2024.
ÖFB Sports director Peter Schöttel commented: “We understood that he had two very attractive options and gave him the time to weigh everything up calmly. We are proud that he chose Austria.”
