Porto president Andre Villas-Boas has come up with an interesting new money making venture.
The former Chelsea, Tottenham and Marseille head coach was speaking at the Portugal football summit soon after the Portuguese football awards gala.
Talking about the future of Porto and Portugal when it comes to football, he stressed the threat of clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City taking teen players from academies so early that clubs like his can’t even make money from them.
He also praised Serie A and LaLiga games going abroad, but came up with a more local idea to raise money.
“We considered other types of competitions that exist in other sports, such as Super Cups or cross-border leagues,” the former Porto head coach said.
“For example, we discussed the creation of an Iberian Super Cup, which I discussed with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and, of course, with the Portuguese clubs Benfica and Sporting.
“The idea was well received.”
