After reports that Italy have finalised their coaching shortlist for their next era, it’s now claimed they’ve made a move for one of the candidates.
Italy are without a manager after Gennaro Gattuso stepped down in response to a third straight World Cup missed.
Italy’s directors are now finalising their plans in the build up to Euro 2028, and it’s reported that Paolo Maldini is leading the charge.
In fact, Sky Italia now claim that the AC Milan legend has met with Pep Guardiola.
The former Manchester City boss has been mooted for the role since it became available due to his playing career in Italy and interest in international coaching.
The two-time European treble winner reportedly met Maldini in Barcelona over the weekend.
It’s claimed by numerous sources that Italy have a four man shortlist that is completed by Antonio Conte, Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo.
The first of those two have coached the side before, while Pirlo would be fresh blood.
However, Guardiola is the clear favourite should he want the job.
He would continue the trend of elite coaches swapping from club management to international, joining Thomas Tuchel at England, Carlo Ancelotti with Brazil and almost certainly Jurgen Klopp with Germany.
