Politicians from Portugal’s green party have demanded that Morocco be withdrawn as 2030 World Cup co-hosts.
The call from LIVRE comes after a high profile incident where an estimated 60,000 Moroccans attempted to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, with 141 losing their lives at the time of writing.
According to international media reports and interviews with those on the ground, the attempts to swim to the island outside of the European Union were triggered by social media disinformation about refugee rights.
The incident was quickly jumped upon by populists around the globe, something the LIVRE party see as an attempt to weaken progressive European politics.

The Green Party spokesperson, Jorge Pinto, said: “In light of recent events, a courageous decision is necessary.
“Portugal cannot participate in the joint organization of the 2030 World Cup with Morocco.
“For its part, LIVRE will do everything in its power to prevent us from being sadly associated with organising this event alongside a country that has not demonstrated its competence and does not inspire confidence.”
He added: “The initial proposal involved Portugal, Spain, and Ukraine hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“For valid reasons, Ukraine withdrew, and Morocco took its place.
“This possibility is now untenable. Not only is Morocco not a reliable partner, but it is now part of the reactionary international group that will use any means to weaken the European political sphere.”
Any damage to Morocco looks unlikely, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino holding a crisis meeting there after his failed ‘FIFA Forward Enterprise’ plan saw his job put at risk.
Furthermore, Spanish journalist Josep Martí Blanch, explained the country’s special position within the politics of sport.
“Morocco is a guest at the World Cup in Spain and Portugal due to pressure from FIFA,” he said.
“Morocco is the United States’ number one friend in North Africa. Being a friend of the United States now also means being a friend of Infantino, and some of the Trump administration’s wishes become orders for Infantino.”
